Hotchkiss Construction was one of four companies recommended to us by Home Advisor San Antonio when looking online to find someone to retile our kitchen floor and install slip-resistant tiles in the upstairs shower. Two of those companies never contacted us and another said the job was too small for them; Brian Hotchkiss called us about the project within a day and came by for a look/see soon thereafter.
My wife and I took a liking to him right from our first meeting -- he was professional, polite, knowledgable and he listened to us. We soon felt sure his company was the one that would do the job we wanted done, and do it well and at a fair price. It feels really good when your hunches play out.
Brian and his wife, Robin, came to our house many times before the project actually began to talk about the work to be done and our tile/flooring options, often leaving samples behind for us to try out. Needless to say (but I'll say it anyway) with our 100+ year old home there were complications and unanticipated challenges to be dealt with as the job started, and we soon discovered that its scope and cost needed to be redefined and refined.
Certain off-white tiles in the bathroom needing replacement were no longer available; our seismic pier & beam foundation that had cracked so many kitchen linoleum tiles required extra special attention to find just the right replacement; water seepage at the shower's base and wobbly BR tiles caused by dried up mortar extended the overall job from four to seven days and added about 30% more to the overall project's cost But it was certainly worth it and neither my wife nor I have any regrets on those increases.
Why? Because the final product greatly exceeded our expectations and imagination. For us, it turned out to be much more than a simple home renovation, it was really a home restoration.
The two man Hotchkiss Construction crew that worked at our house were always on time, efficient, conscientious and very capable. Jeremy and Michael prepped their work areas on arrival and cleaned it all up at the end of the day; they were the ones who discovered unforeseen problems in the upstairs bathroom, explaining the tile issues and recommending solutions to deal with the problems. We greatly appreciated their patience, practical advice and experienced counsel.
Brian and Robin stressed from the get go that they wanted us to be happy with their work and the final product. We learned these weren't just empty words or insincere sentiments.
Last day of the job and all that's left to do is mortar-in the just installed new red custom tiles we had selected for the shower's baseboards. We loved their design & color and thought they would be new and a good fun touch to the shower, but when we actually saw them in place we realized we had made a big mistake -- they really didn't go well with the shower's other older custom tiles and looked odd and out of place. Well, the week before we held them up to the shower wall and shouted 'Yes!', so the choice (and blame) was all ours. We'd just have to learn to live with it.
We were reluctant to say anything to Brian about our border tile-choice remorse -- it was our fault after all and the work was 95% done -- but he sensed our unease and reminded us that he and Robin wanted us to be happy with the job and the tiles we've installed. "If you want to change these out, to replace them now, we'll do it." And so they did, though it needed another work day and a cut in their profit margin to do so, and we are so glad we switched the tiles out. Five Star Recommendation.

Hodgkiss Construction did an excellent job. I would recommend them to my friends. I was very pleased with Brian and his men that worked with Hotchkiss company. I will hire them again.
Brian is very dependable, knowledgeable and has hired trustworthy people to work for him. After interviewing 3 other firms we decided to work with Hotchkiss. We highly recommend him.
Hired Hotchkiss Construction to remove concrete side patio area and replace with wooden deck for my Mother's home in San Antonio. They were also able to retain, after some adjustments/repairs, an existing patio cover. Brian and his workers were very responsive and accommodating. Living in Houston, I depended upon them to communicate well with my Mother in my absence. A definite 5++ for keeping me and my Mother well informed. I highly recommend Brian and the men he brings to the job.
Brian was great! Always on time, good communication. Took much longer than we thought since we added new floor. Always patient with us..Came back as many times as needed. Wonderful looking bathroom.
